I however have played both and prefer the first one by a long shot. If you could stand the first one then you might be able to stand Riptide. Overall, while the game is considered the second in the series, it's more like Dead Island 1.5. This combined with the fact that our character already has a specialisation means there isn't much variation in character development. There are three skill trees, and while the skills themselves feel nice, the trees themselves are quite small. This makes the game a good break from the standard zombie apocalypse-style game, as we get to experience the setting in an exotic jungle. There are two major maps, those being the city and the jungle, with the majority of our time spent on the latter. There is a good amount of content in the game. The soundtrack of the game is very fitting and suits the game well, but it lacks that spark, making it quite boring, as most of the tracks sound the same. Cutting through zombies, and exploring the map feels good, no major issues. However, it's not a story you will remember for long after finishing the game. Considering that most new games have a starting price between $50-$60 dollars, i'd say that Dead Island: Riptide is a great buy at the reduced price of $39.99 on steam considering the lack of new material. I have to admit, there seems to be a great variety of weapons that were not in the first game (my favorite is the staff that you wield like a bad-ass, zombie slaying Darth Maul). There have not been any graphical improvements to the game over the first one, all of the old characters remain as playable characters (with the exception of a new character with a ridiculously fun, but overpowered running kick move), and I have only run across one new type of zombie so far in a few hours of game play. When i say that Dead Island: Riptide has the exact same game play as the first Dead Island, i mean the EXACT same. However, if you hated the first dead island, stay well away from this title. If you loved the first dead island, this game will offer the same zombie slaying fun that the last game had. ![]() ![]() If you loved the first dead island, this game will Dead Island: Riptide offers almost the exact same experience as the previous Dead Island.
